Effective Industrial Relations Strategy Mitigates Union Escalation
Background
The client is a marketing and communication services company headquartered in Mumbai. To support its business operations in Maharashtra, the company partnered with TeamLease Services Limited to deploy manpower across functional roles. Under the engagement, the workforce was on the payroll of TeamLease and deployed at the client’s premises under a contract staffing arrangement. TeamLease was responsible for compliance, payroll, and statutory obligations, while the client oversaw day-to-day supervision and operational delivery.
Situation / Challenges
During the engagement, 80+ associates deployed at the client location collectively raised grievances related to employment conditions. These concerns were escalated through a third-party intervention by a politically affiliated trade union. The union alleged non-payment of statutory dues, inadequate leave benefits, and discrepancies in HR-related practices.
The situation escalated rapidly as the union began submitting repeated complaints and representations against the client to labour authorities, government offices, and political channels. This created significant operational disruption, reputational risk, and compliance pressure on the client. The union further raised an unjustified financial demand, attempting to coerce a settlement. The situation had the potential to impact brand credibility, client relationships, and project continuity. Left unaddressed, it could also trigger wider labour unrest and inspection orders from statutory authorities.
TeamLease’s Intervention
As the associates were officially TeamLease employees, the responsibility to address the situation and protect client interests was immediately assumed by our Industrial Relations (IR) and Compliance Team. TeamLease initiated a structured approach:
- Conducted an internal audit of employment records, payroll, and statutory benefits to validate compliance.
 - Opened formal communication channels with the union to de-escalate aggression and initiate dialogue.
 - Engaged in multiple rounds of negotiation while ensuring adherence to legal provisions under the Contract Labour (Regulation and Abolition) Act and applicable labour laws.
 - Maintained continuous updates to the client while insulating them from direct union pressure.
 - Reassured employees through structured grievance redressal, eliminating misinformation and building trust.

End-to-End Payroll Outsourcing
All field executives and operations staff were transferred to TeamLease payroll, ensuring error-free processing, statutory compliance, and effective workforce management.
