Background

The client, a leading secure storage and records-management provider, offers end-to-end information lifecycle solutions, including document archiving, secure data handling, digital transformation, and retrieval services across sectors such as banking, insurance, telecom, and IT/ITES. With a strong national footprint, it enables businesses to maintain compliance, data security, and operational efficiency.

To support operations at its key Khalapur facility in Maharashtra, the client partnered with TeamLease for staffing and compliance management. Under this arrangement, 21 associates were deployed across roles like warehouse handling, logistics coordination, and document management, with TeamLease managing payroll, statutory compliance, and labour-law adherence.

Situation / Challenges

TAs part of a broader operational restructuring plan, the client decided to relocate its operations from Khalapur to Bhiwandi and issued transfer orders to all deployed employees. However, what was intended to be a smooth operational transition soon evolved into a serious challenge. The employees, backed by a politically affiliated union, strongly resisted the transfer order. Their discontent escalated into an aggressive protest outside the facility, where they obstructed the movement of materials from Khalapur to Bhiwandi. This confrontation not only disrupted day-to-day operations but also created a volatile situation that risked spiralling into a law-and-order issue. The client faced mounting pressure as the unrest threatened to delay the relocation and affect business continuity.

TeamLease’s Intervention

TeamLease acted swiftly and decisively to manage the crisis. The on-ground team immediately established communication channels with local union leaders and simultaneously sought assistance from the police to ensure safety and compliance with legal norms. Rather than relying on force or confrontation, TeamLease focused on dialogue and persuasion, engaging with all stakeholders to reach a peaceful resolution.

Through continuous negotiations and transparent communication, TeamLease successfully de-escalated tensions and brokered an understanding between the employees, union representatives, and management. The efforts culminated in a formal settlement agreement signed by Union and TeamLease, ensuring that the process complied with both legal requirements and principles of fairness.

Outcome

Following the agreement, full and final settlements were distributed peacefully to most employees at the union office. A few employees initially refused to accept the settlement, but through patient follow-up and reassurance, TeamLease persuaded them to collect their dues from the Mumbai office. Ultimately, the Khalapur facility was closed without further conflict, and the operational migration to Bhiwandi was completed smoothly.
