Payroll Management & Tech-Enabled PAN-India Hiring

BACKGROUND

In 2018, a forward-looking payments bank set out with a bold vision: to deepen financial inclusion by bringing essential banking services to every corner of India. With a rapidly expanding footprint, the bank has over 600 branches and has built a network of more than 1.5 lakh access points, reaching even the remotest villages. Most of these outlets weren’t in the bustling metros but in the rural heartlands, far from the usual talent pools. To manage this scale, efficient staffing and payroll management became essential. By combining the trust of a strong physical presence with the efficiency of digital platforms—and a vision for streamlined payroll mgmt—the bank aimed to make services like savings, remittances, and bill payments truly accessible to the underserved.

CHALLENGES

As operations scaled rapidly, the bank faced a critical need to hire associates across its 600+ branches spanning 29 states and 8 union territories, requiring a quick and uniform rollout. Multiple staffing vendors were engaged to meet the demand, but that only added to the complexity. The lack of centralised payroll management led to inconsistent practices across vendors, creating confusion for employees, increasing compliance risks, and diluting the overall workforce experience.

Most branches were located in Tier-3 and Tier-4 rural areas, making talent acquisition in remote locations a significant challenge. Local talent was scarce, infrastructure was patchy, and the hiring ecosystem was fragmented. Meanwhile, retaining and skilling the existing staff to handle core banking services only made the task tougher. Without a centralised way to track attendance or performance, the bank struggled to maintain operational visibility.

SOLUTION

This is where TeamLease stepped in, bringing its PAN-India reach and deep recruitment expertise to the table. TeamLease developed a unified strategy to source, onboard, and manage talent across even the remote parts of the country. Leveraging technology and a dedicated recruitment team, TeamLease ensured quick and efficient onboarding of associates.

To enhance employee retention, a new incentive structure was co-developed with the client to engage and motivate existing staff. Partnering with a reputed staffing provider helped the bank streamline operations, maintain consistency, and brought improved control and clarity to payroll management. Adding to this transformation was the rollout of DWS (Digital Workforce Solution). This tool provided the bank with real-time visibility into its workforce, utilising geo-fencing and geo-tagging to track attendance and daily activity logs. What was once a blind spot has become a dashboard of actionable insights, enabling better planning, accountability, and control.
