Fueling India’s Green Economy: Jobs, Salaries & Skills in Renewables

India’s renewable energy sector is driving a transformative shift toward sustainability while fueling economic growth. With ambitious targets like achieving 500 GW of renewable energy capacity and reducing carbon intensity by 45% by 2030, the sector is poised to create over 3 million jobs, highlighting its role as a catalyst for both environmental and economic progress. As of October 2024, renewable energy makes up 46.3% of India’s total power capacity, showcasing the country’s commitment to clean energy.

Job opportunities in solar, wind, and green hydrogen are expanding rapidly. Roles such as solar PV installers, wind turbine technicians, and energy storage operators are in high demand, with salaries ranging from ₹27,000 to ₹38,000 for entry- to mid-level positions. However, a significant skills gap remains, particularly in specialized areas like green hydrogen production and advanced energy storage systems. Bridging this gap is crucial for meeting industry demands.

Government initiatives such as the Skill India Mission have trained over 140 million individuals, with focused programs targeting renewable energy skills. Establishing green skill development centers, increasing apprenticeship opportunities, and fostering collaborations between industries and academia are steps in the right direction. These efforts aim to ensure an inclusive, highly skilled workforce capable of supporting India’s clean energy transition.

While challenges like limited access to training for marginalized groups persist, targeted reskilling and upskilling initiatives are addressing these barriers. As the renewable energy sector matures, competitive salaries and long-term growth prospects are enhancing workforce retention, with attrition rates improving steadily.

India’s renewable energy journey exemplifies a balanced approach to environmental goals and economic development. By investing in strategic training, fostering innovation, and promoting partnerships, the nation is building a robust foundation for a sustainable, prosperous future powered by clean energy.
