Job Growth in Renewable Energy through India’s Green Transition

India’s green transition is driving remarkable workforce transformation, fueled by the goal of achieving 500 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030. This shift is a response to climate concerns and a catalyst for significant job creation. By 2030, the renewable energy sector will generate over 3 million jobs, with 1.7 million new opportunities expected in the next three years. Notably, job demand in the industry increased from 8.5% in FY23 to 23.7% in FY24.

The sector requires a wide range of talent, including skilled, semi-skilled, and unskilled workers. Key roles such as solar panel installers, energy auditors, wind turbine technicians, and operational support professionals are in high demand. Additionally, semi-skilled workers are needed for maintenance tasks at large solar farms, contributing to steady job creation.

Government initiatives play a crucial role in workforce development. The Skill India Mission has trained over 5.4 million individuals in renewable energy-related skills, while over 3,000 Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) have been established to meet industry needs. Programs like the ‘PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana,’ which aims to install rooftop solar panels in 10 million homes, will create numerous jobs for installation, maintenance, and system optimisation.

The Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme for solar PV cells further accelerates domestic manufacturing while generating thousands of direct and indirect employment opportunities. Additionally, the Green Hydrogen Policy is opening new avenues for specialised roles. Training programs in green hydrogen and battery storage technologies prepare the workforce for emerging roles, ensuring India stays competitive in advanced energy technologies.

The renewable energy sector has also gained momentum, showcasing innovations and facilitating collaborations that drive job creation. With sustained efforts in skill development and innovation, India’s green transition is poised to create a thriving employment ecosystem while advancing its renewable energy goals.
